Designing your home for the very first time can be an exciting time for both you and your family. There are several things that you will need to consider when doing home design.

The kitchen is regarded as the heart of most homes. Other than the bathroom, it is probably the most used space in the house. The way a kitchen is designed can make cooking an activity that one can look forward to each day. Proper organization can make it easy for family members to help out in food preparation without necessarily crowding the space. If you like the idea of entertaining guests while working in the kitchen, you may opt for an open layout which gives you visual access to the living room. You can also decide on the type of lightning to be used in this room. You can combine natural light with task lighting. Also popular fixtures in kitchens are track and recessed lighting. Depending on your cooking needs, you can customize the building of your kitchen to include an island, a built-in microwave or double oven.

Much thought should also be placed on the dining area. Dining table can be traditional round or rectangular. At present, more and more homes use square tables for a more modern look. This area can serve as a multi-purpose space or if you want to make an allowance for guests, you can choose to have a bar or counter that can serve as an extension to the dining room. You can choose to have a separate area where you can eat breakfast or have less formal meals.

Family entertainment activities are usually done in the living or family room. Built-ins and shelving would be ideal here to accommodate appliances for an entertainment center, or gaming consoles and controllers. Built-ins are clever ways to reduce clutter and keep electrical wires and cords from being exposed and becoming hazards. Plasma or LCD TV?s can either be mounted on a wall, form part of an entertainment center or have its own rack. For a unique sound experience, install surround sound units prior to drywall fitting so as to hide unsightly wires.

For windows, deciding on where to situate them should be in relation to sunlight. If it is aesthetically pleasing and complementary to the rest of the house, you can employ blinds or install French windows. Curtains are also a nice way to accentuate and add color to a room.

Applying designs to your home should coincide with you and your family?s lifestyle. Since this will be your place of Zen and where most of your memories will be created, it is important to plan carefully and work with an interior designer that is willing to work with you to bring your combined ideas to life.
